Short Biography

Born in 1964, Denizli, Prof. Dilek Demirbaş completed her secondary and high school education at Marmara College in İstanbul. In 1985, she graduated with superior achievement from İstanbul University, Faculty of Economics. Then, she started her first master’s program in the Department of Economics at İstanbul University, Faculty of Social Sciences in 1985. After completing her studies, she pursued dissertation studies for six months as a visiting student at the University of Rice in Texas, Houston in the U.S. and completed her master’s studies with outstanding achievement in 1987. 

She worked as an auditor in the Finance Department of Netaş company in İstanbul in 1987 and 1988. In 1989, she moved with her husband to Leicester in the U.K. to pursue graduate and postgraduate studies. She completed her second master’s degree in economics at Leicester University, Department of Economics between 1993 and 1995 in the honor roll, and began teaching Introduction to Economics, Econometrics and Statistics classes to undergraduate students upon her admission to the postgraduate program. Granted one of the very limited number of postgraduate scholarships made available to students with superior scholarship by the Ministry of National Education, Office of the Education Attaché in London in 1995, she completed her doctorate studies in economics in 2000. 

The same year, she started her academic career at the Newcastle Business School in Newcastle upon Tyne in the U.K., where she worked as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) between 2000 and 2004, as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) between 2004 and 2009, and as a Reader (Full Professor) between 2009 and 2011. In tandem with teaching, she served in various administrative roles including the Head of Strategic Management and International Business Department, FT MBA program leadership. Upon deciding to return to Turkey at the end of 2011, she joined Yıldırım Beyazıt University, which was established in Ankara in 2010 as a state university offering its curriculum in the English language, as a Professor in the Business School. She was a co-founder of the Department of International Trade and Business, which she headed between 2012 and 2016. 

In 2016, she joined İstanbul University as a Professor in the Faculty of Economics, Department of Economic Theory. She has academic publications in Turkish and English languages, conducts national and international projects, acts as an advisor to graduate and postgraduate students, and offers consultancy to various institutions including development agencies and The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). In addition, she also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the International University of Sarajevo, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Economy, Culture and Society. She still serves as a board member of the Economic Research Foundation.
