Short Biography
Dr. Mehmet Ali Başak is an Assistant Professor of Sociology of Religion in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Ibn Haldun University. He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Ottawa. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Başak earned two Master’s degrees: an M.A. in Religious Studies from Memorial University of Newfoundland and an M.A. in the Study of Contemporary Muslim Thought and Societies from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Qatar). He completed his Bachelor's degree at Middle East Technical University.
Dr. Başak's research focuses on the sociology of religion, with a particular emphasis on nonreligion, religious socialization, and the intersection of internet and digital technologies within the Muslim world. He served as a research assistant on the TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1001 funded project "Nonreligious Beliefs and Practices in Türkiye." Additionally, he worked as a research assistant on two SSHRC-funded projects: "Nonreligion in a Complex Future" at the University of Ottawa and "Canadian Muslim Online" at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
